Carved Wood: Large Solid Kiaat Lidded Bowl

Infuse your interior layouts with the rich sculptural warmth of this large-scale hand-turned wooden tureen bowl.

Masterfully lathed from a substantial single block of solid indigenous South African Kiaat hardwood, it highlights an expansive, continuous ribbon of striking wild grain figures and interlocking golden-brown chatoyancy. The generous, bulbous form features a stepped rim configuration designed to receive a matching custom-fitted lid, which is crowned by an integrated architectural finial knob. Neither too heavy nor too light, this highly versatile vintage wooden masterwork acts as a commanding tactile focal feature for minimal organic tablescapes, rustic kitchen islands, or mid-century sideboard displays.

Kiaat (Pterocarpus angolensis) is a highly prized indigenous hardwood of Southern Africa, celebrated by master woodworkers for its structural stability, natural resistance to moisture warping, and high contrast grain patterns ranging from deep chocolate browns to honey gold. The continuous horizontal grain alignment and clean internal contours confirm that this substantial piece was lathed by a skilled studio craftsman utilizing traditional single-block faceplate turning techniques.

Original Intended Use: Premium decorative lidded fruit bowl or warm countertop dry storage container. Alternate Suggested Use: Statement mantle sculpture, tactile entryway catchall bowl, or natural centrepiece accent for interior styling.

In traditional South African studio woodworking, turning a large, lidded vessel requires seasoned Kiaat heartwood to minimize wood expansion over the decades. The precision stepped lip ensures that the lid settles flush against the body, trapping air naturally to stabilize moisture levels, which historically made these handsome handmade tureens excellent for keeping dried goods or baked treats perfectly fresh on colonial-era kitchen dressers.

Made in South Africa, Circa 1970s, making this Studio Woodwork approximately 47–56 years old in 2026.

Each piece is researched with care and supported by comprehensive historical notes drawn from available sources, comparative analysis, and archival references. While I am not a certified appraiser or authentication specialist, my attributions reflect careful independent research and may be refined as new evidence emerges. These notes are offered to enrich understanding and appreciation of each item, rather than as formal guarantees of age, provenance, or authenticity.

Height 20cm, Lid Diameter 22cm, Circumference 91cm.

Very good vintage condition Visible Flaws: Well-preserved structural condition; the solid wood body shows natural surface grain variations, minor superficial shelf wear to the base ring, a tiny white fleck on the lid surface, and a very short, superficial hair-thin expansion hairline crack near the finial base that does not compromise the structure.
