Planter: Chinese Hand-Painted Blue & White Porcelain Carp & Lotus Motif Bulb Planter Bowl

A wonderfully soulful and classic piece of traditional Asian export pottery, this vintage Chinese blue and white porcelain bulb bowl carries the quiet weight of decades of domestic history.

The exterior is richly decorated in a hand-painted cobalt blue underglaze depicting three large, spirited Carp navigating a dense aquatic landscape of blooming lotus blossoms and water reeds. But the true magic of this vessel lies inside. The unglazed, sandy-textured flat interior well has been naturally patinated by time and historic use, holding the memory of generations of spring bulbs—like fragrant Narcissus and paperwhites—that were forced inside its walls. Free of modern printed maker marks, this heavy, beautifully rounded studio piece brings a timeless touch of Chinoiserie romance, a lived-in history, and a visual blessing of abundance to any contemporary tabletop display.

The Story Beyond the Image: While the glossy blue exterior catches the eye, the true heart of this planter is its beautifully weathered interior well. For decades, this bowl served as a centrepiece for seasonal renewal. The faint mineral tinting on the raw, wheel-swirled clay floor tells a story of years spent holding river stones, fresh water, and green roots pushing upward into bloom. It is a tactile reminder of slow, intentional living.

Artisan Diagnostic Markers: The authenticity of this piece's hand-thrown production is verified by the coarse, unglazed circular rim on the bottom, displaying a characteristic orange-brown iron halo line where the raw clay oxidised against the kiln floor during firing. The deep cobalt blue accents on the carp exhibit natural pigment pooling from manual glaze preparation, confirming hand-painted execution rather than a modern computer-printed stencil transfer.

Made in China, keeping alive the centuries-old visual legacy of Ming and Qing dynasty blue-and-white ceramics. Blue and white porcelain remains one of the world's most enduring décor styles, revered by interior designers for its ability to blend seamlessly with both stark modern minimalism and rich, maximalist antiques.

Original Intended Use: Traditional Chinese Narcissus (Paperwhite) bulb forcing tray or low succulent/bonsai planter.
