Drostdy Potteries, operating from 1948 to the mid-1980s in Grahamstown (now Makhanda), South Africa, is one of the most significant and collectible South African ceramic manufacturers. Their Stonecraft line represents the functional, monochrome oven-to-table range that has become increasingly sought after by local collectors.

More Details

The pottery was established in Grahamstown (now Makhanda), South Africa, in 1948, following earlier initiatives to exploit local rich clay deposits.

The name "Drostdy" came from its location in the historic Drostdy building area of the town. Drostdy Ware is known for a style often described as Anglo-Oriental, which blended European and African artistic traditions.

The company produced two main lines: Drostdy Ware: This line focused on decorative and fancy items, including vases, figurines, and the hand-painted crockery with San art motifs, As well as Cookery Nook Kitchenware: This was a more functional, inexpensive, monochrome range of oven-to-table ware, which included items like the coffee set.

The pottery employed numerous local artists (known as "paintresses") and exported its wares internationally. However, due to competition from inexpensive imports and the removal of import quotas, Grahamstown Pottery went into provisional liquidation in 1965.

Did you Know?

It was purchased by Continental China in 1967, which continued limited production until finally cutting down extensively on the range in the late 1980s.

Today, Drostdy Ware pieces are highly sought-after collector's items due to their historical and cultural significance, unique designs, and limited production runs.
