Dinnerware: Fish Serving Platter by Ditmar-Urbach

Large Vintage Sculptural Fish Serving Platter by Ditmar-Urbach, Czechoslovakia.

A magnificent and rare interwar sculptural fish platter realistically modelled in the highly stylized form of a flatfish or carp. The design features a beautifully contrasting palette: a thick milk-cream glazed earthenware chassis paired with an airbrushed moss-green head accentuation, soft sage-green highlighted dorsal fins and tail, and a vibrant hand-painted coral-orange mouth highlight.

The plate features a masterfully smooth shallow-well interior designed to anchor grand culinary displays, while the perimeter curves gracefully upwards into a contoured wave-moulded border. This rare figural piece aligns seamlessly with Grand Millennial, Coastal Maximalist, and historic European tablescape revival interiors.

Original Intended Use: Elite centrepiece presentation platter for whole baked fish, lobster, or premium seafood spreads in fine interwar European country estates.

Alternate Suggested Use: A high-impact focal statement on a moody dining room gallery wall, a cocktail display platter on a luxury bar cart, or a coastal centrepiece tray for fine linen table settings.

More Details

Unlike standard flat modern kitchen platters, this authentic antique-style masterwork possesses incredible sculptural topography. The surface exhibits an immaculate, high-gloss vitrified finish that perfectly reflects surrounding light, giving the fish an organic, water-glistening appearance. The reverse side features an integrated, continuous oval ceramic foot rim structure required to safely distribute its heavy centre of gravity on high-end marble islands or fine oak sideboards, beautifully surrounding the factory's distinctive stamped circular "Made in Czechoslovakia" export hallmark with its centralized shape code.

Did you Know?

Did you know that this exact sculptural fish service style was originally an Art Nouveau masterpiece sculpted by the legendary modernist designer Albin Müller in 1906 for the Darmstadt Artists' Colony (Darmstädter Künstlerkolonie) in Germany?

Because the design became an overnight visual sensation across European high society, the casting rights were shared with select elite continental manufacturers. This coveted variant was produced by the acclaimed Ditmar-Urbach pottery—a high-end ceramic conglomerate formed when the Austrian manufacturer L. Ditmar merged with the Czech Urbach Brothers. Finding a massive centrepiece platter with its original, vibrant 1940s airbrushed glaze layout intact is an extraordinary opportunity for serious antiquarians.

Origin & Era

Made in Czechoslovakia, Circa 1940s.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 4 cm, Length 47 cm, Width 26 cm.

Vintage Condition

The glazed colours remain incredibly vibrant, crisp, and clean with beautiful front face appeal. As a genuine, historic piece of fine European pottery that has travelled through time, it exhibits faint, completely expected fine glaze crazing distributed evenly across the white field under close inspection—a gorgeous testament to its authenticity. Crucially, the reverse underside rim features a significant, raw unglazed chip/flake to the ceramic body along with an adjacent minor glaze nick on the edge profile. This chip remains entirely on the underside edge, meaning it is completely hidden from view when the platter is resting on a flat surface or hung flush against a wall. Standard minor shelf-friction scuffing is also present on the unglazed base ring.
