Drostdy Ware Potteries: Fluted Mantle Boat Vase

Vintage Drostdy Ware Burgundy Fluted Mantle Boat Vase

Mid-century South African art pottery boat-shaped mantle trough finished in a lustrous deep red glaze. Featuring a uniform, deep-set vertical ribbed relief structure wrapping around the entire outer wall. The interior is fully glazed to match, showing clean, crisp construction lines free of manufacturing cracks.

Finished in an iconic, high-gloss burgundy wine glaze characteristic of mid-century South African art pottery studios. With a sweeping, stylized crescent profile terminated in elegant, upturned finials to create an imposing theatrical silhouette. Raised on an integrated, smooth oval pedestal foot ring to ensure stable tabletop presentation for sprawling mantle arrangements.

Original Intended Use: Horizontal mantle vase or dining table floral centrepiece display.

Alternate Suggested Use: A high-styled retro succulent trough, premium console dish for keys, or a standalone architectural pop on a minimalist shelving tier.

Did you Know?

These long mantle vases were designed to sit perfectly beneath low-hanging mid-century mirrors or artwork frames without obstructing the view — allowing cascading foliage like trailing vines to break up the structured silhouette. Drostdy Ware was produced by Grahamstown Potteries in the Eastern Cape, one of South Africa's most respected mid-century art pottery manufacturers. While Lucia Ware produced similar organic ribbed forms during the same period, the deep burgundy oxblood glaze and specific flared pedestal foot profile are signature hallmarks that distinguish authentic Drostdy pieces.

Origin & Era

Made in South Africa (Grahamstown), Circa 1950s-1960s.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 12.5cm, Length 29.5cm, Width 11.5cm

Vintage Condition

Excellent vintage condition. The high-gloss glaze preserves incredible colour depth and a mirror-like shine, devoid of the typical dulling or heavy scaling seen on utilitarian planters. The interior is exceptionally clean, indicating it was primarily used as a dry display piece rather than a wet planter.

Visible Flaws: Minor age-related shelf wear on the unglazed contact ring of the bottom pedestal foot. No chips, hairlines, or flea bites are present along the sweeping upper rim or fluted ridges, ensuring its elite collector display value remains fully intact.
