Antiquities: Framed Terracotta Juglet, Attributed Roman c.1st–3rd Century AD

This hand-formed clay vessel balances archaic Mediterranean design with museum-style presentation.

Suspended within a deeply recessed architectural shadowbox, the globular body rests against a mirrored rear wall that provides a reflection of its loop handle and ring base. This dimensional interplay offers an excellent decorative focal point on a modern sideboard or nested into a gallery wall layout, contrasting raw, earthy pottery textures against bright gilded wood.

Researched attribution: a provincial Roman terracotta juglet, possibly used for household liquids, oils or perfume, dated to circa the first–third centuries AD. The attribution, date and original function are based on the supplied research, not independent authentication.

The exterior has surface deposits and weathering described in the supplied research as calcified accretions and mineral oxidation. Their composition and a history of underground burial have not been established.

The vessel is sealed within a deep wood shadowbox frame with leaf moulding, a cream fabric-covered spacer, mirrored backing and wire mounts. The frame’s proposed mid-twentieth-century date and archival material specifications remain unconfirmed.

Original Intended Use: Proposed domestic oil, perfume or liquid-offering vessel. Alternate Suggested Use: Architectural accent or statement gallery display.

Did you Know?

Small terracotta vessels offer a fascinating starting point for exploring everyday storage and personal care in the ancient Mediterranean. The supplied research attributes this juglet to the Roman period, circa 1st–3rd century AD, and proposes an oil, perfume or liquid-offering function. Its mirrored display invites a closer look at the body, handle and foot while keeping the sealed enclosure intact. Surface deposits alone do not establish an object's age or burial history.

Research & Attribution: My research attributes this terracotta juglet to Roman provincial production, circa first–third centuries AD. Its globular body, narrow neck and single strap handle were considered alongside comparable vessels in museum collections, including the British Museum, Israel Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art. These comparisons inform my attribution; they do not constitute authentication of this particular vessel by those institutions.

Surface deposits, weathering and firing characteristics formed part of that assessment, rather than establishing ancient origin on their own. The vessel is sealed within its display frame, limiting examination for restoration, adhesives or later intervention. This is my researched attribution; independent academic authentication remains outstanding.

Origin & Era

Roman Provincial — likely North Africa (Tunisia) or Eastern Mediterranean, based on typology and comparable museum examples. Circa 1st–3rd century AD.

Research & Attribution

Each piece is researched with care and supported by comprehensive historical notes drawn from available sources, comparative analysis, and archival references. While I am not a certified appraiser or authentication specialist, my attributions reflect careful independent research and may be refined as new evidence emerges. These notes are offered to enrich understanding and appreciation of each item, rather than as formal guarantees of age, provenance, or authenticity.
