High Tea: Shore & Coggings Art Deco Duos, 4

4 Floral Art Deco Duos by Shore & Coggins — Bell China Pattern 2840, 8 Pieces.

A rare and strikingly vibrant vintage Art Deco Bell China 8-piece teacup and saucer hostess service for four. Manufactured by the historic Shore & Coggins Ltd at the Edensor Works in Longton, Staffordshire, this set features the elusive Pattern Number 2840, meticulously executed in the late 1930s to early 1940s.

Each piece boasts a bold high-contrast palette of hand-painted golden-yellow Icelandic poppies, sponged pale green and slate-grey foliage, and clean horizontal green pinstripes running around the bases. The defining Art Deco feature is the dramatically geometric angular handle design, accented with hand-painted solid black blocks.

Original Intended Use: A high-end afternoon tea service designed to make a bold stylistic statement for guests.

Alternate Suggested Use: Spectacular standalone display pieces for an Art Deco chinaware cabinet, or styled on open shelving in a vintage-inspired kitchen as functional period art.

More Details

Because these pieces feature delicate overglaze hand-painting, they should never be subjected to modern dishwashers; a gentle hand-wash in warm water ensures the enamels remain bright for another century!

Did you Know?

Did you know that Shore & Coggins (operating out of the Edensor Works in Longton, Staffordshire) used the trade name "Bell China" from 1911 until the factory ceased production in 1966?

Their late-1930s designs are highly regarded by Art Deco purists due to their adventurous geometric handles and bold contrast paintwork, which strongly rivalled higher-priced contemporary makers like Clarice Cliff.

This specific pattern, with its striking black handle highlights and yellow poppy florals, stands as a textbook example of pre-war British modernist design.

Origin & Era

Made in United Kingdom (Staffordshire, England), 1936-1941.
