Oriental Art: Palm Tree & Butterfly Ginger Jar & Cachepot Planter Pair

This exceptional matching pair of vintage ceramics brings a commanding layer of Hollywood Regency glamour, rich Chinoiserie texture, and sophisticated tropical character straight onto an entryway console table or open conservatory display hutch layout.

Manufactured by the historic house of Toyo Cultural Trading, this uniform 2-piece collection features one tall lidded ginger jar (36cm) and a matching scalloped loop-handled cachepot planter (16cm).

The ice-blue glazed bodies are beautifully decorated with a vibrant, hand-finished botanical study of structural green palm trees circled by a swarm of multi-coloured butterflies and honeybees, executed over an ultra-glossy, heavily crackled vitrified glaze skin. Bearing their official underglaze stamped artist marks and original paper lot tags on the reverse, this flawless master collection serves as an extraordinary interior design anchor.

The bases feature the official brick-red underglaze transfer stamp displaying the signature robed nobleman seal of Toyo Cultural Trading. Highly collected across Southern Africa throughout the late 20th century, these high-end Asian art wares are celebrated by curators for fusing classic oriental silhouettes with vibrant, space-age colour palettes. Crafted utilizing a specialized mineral glaze matrix that shrinks rapidly during the kiln's reduction-cooling phase. This technical engineering forces a tight, beautiful spiderweb crazing network to permanently lock beneath the smooth glass outer skin, providing an elegant antique-stone look that hides fingerprints effortlessly. Includes both the rare large-scale flagon ginger jar with its custom-fitted domed finial lid and a heavy-gauge rounded planter foundation detailed with a wavy scalloped perimeter rim and reinforced ceramic faux-bamboo lifting handles.

Original Intended Use: High-status residential entry hall mantlepiece garniture, formal conservatory plant hosting, or luxury parlour accent.

Alternate Suggested Use: A spectacular texturized staging prop system for fine art lifestyle or culinary photography editorials, a high-impact centrepiece layout for a coastal resort entryway, or an exceptional heirloom gift for an eclectic ceramic art collector.

Did you Know?

The tradition of 'Hua Diao' (which literally translates to 'Floral Carving') dates back centuries to the ancient Shaoxing region, where families would celebrate the birth of a child by burying heavy clay jars of premium rice wine deep in the earth.

The outer walls of the jars were intricately carved and painted with sprawling murals to tell the family's story. When the child grew up and married decades later, the ground was excavated, and the beautifully patinated ceramic jug was brought to the wedding feast to be shared among the guests!

During the mid-20th century, the Taiwanese Monopoly Bureau produced these heavy, high-fired porcelain flagons to replicate that grand ancient custom, using liquid glass glazes to ensure the dragon medallions and relief script would stay permanently vibrant without ever fading.

Origin & Era

Made in the 1970s–1980s, standing as a beautifully preserved, character-rich historical lifestyle asset.
