Limited Edition Prints: Philip Bawcombe Old Georgian Houses Stellenbosch, 20/1000

This exceptional, gallery-mounted architectural statement piece brings a commanding layer of classic South African heritage and academic sophistication straight into a modern interior.

Masterfully executed by the celebrated architectural illustrator Philip Bawcombe (1906–2000), this hand-signed and numbered lithograph print documents the historic facade of the "Old Georgian Houses" in Stellenbosch. The work showcases Bawcombe's signature loose, fluid fountain-pen ink technique accented by soft, atmospheric colour washes that beautifully breathe life into the historic terraced streetscape.

Rendered on premium, heavily textured linen-woven fine art paper, the piece is hand-indexed as a rare, limited edition (Number 20 of 1000). It comes professionally presented inside a wide, multi-tiered bevel matte board with a refined gold-beaded inner trim, housed within a deeply stepped solid South African Kiaat (Wild Teak) gallery frame to add immediate historic gravitas and texture to an executive study or formal dining wall.

Hand-signed and hand-titled in pencil along the lower margins by the renowned British-born South African artist Philip William Bawcombe, F.R.S.A., who famously served as an official war artist during WWII before dedicating his career to documenting Southern Africa's fast-vanishing historic buildings.

A highly critical early-run piece, explicitly numbered 20 of a strict, limited release of 1,000 prints globally, featuring a verified, hand-rendered wet pencil signature on textured laid archival paper stock documenting the famous plural "Houses" street view. Features the authentic original teal foil exhibition label on the reverse backing board from the historic SASA (South African Society of Artists), verifying prestigious institutional handling and museum-grade gallery history. Custom-mounted within a heavy, stepped profile solid Kiaat (Wild Teak) wood frame showcasing its organic golden-honey interlocking grain and distinctive lighter sapwood tones.

Original Intended Use: Executive boardroom, academic library, or formal parlour accent art. Alternate Suggested Use: Elegant focal piece anchoring a minimalist mid-century corridor console or an upscale design element for a historic Winelands boutique hotel or guesthouse.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Frame Total: Height 56cm, Width 63cm, Depth 3cm.

Vintage Condition

Great vintage structural condition with a perfectly tight solid timber frame structure, crystal-clear glass, and zero backboard wobbles. The interior lithograph print remains entirely crisp and beautifully preserved with zero fading to the ink lines, zero water damage tracking, and zero paper foxing spots.

Visible Flaws: The inner profile lip of the solid Kiaat frame displays localized superficial weathering, flaked historic varnish, and texturing along the natural lighter sapwood grain channels all around the perimeter. The small metal hanging ring eyelet on the lower right of the reverse backing board has broken loose from the wood frame, meaning the hanging wire will need to be re-anchored or replaced by the buyer before wall mounting. Priced accordingly to account for these honest character lines.
