The Elgin style is one of the most enduring and recognisable sherry glass designs in British tableware history, named after the Scottish town of Elgin and popularised through the 19th and 20th centuries by British glassware manufacturers and importers. The distinctive tiered knobbed stem — sometimes called a "knopped" stem — was originally a practical feature that prevented the drinker's hand from warming the bowl, preserving the temperature of chilled fino or manzanilla sherry.

This set was manufactured in Turkey for a UK supplier and distributed to South Africa — a common supply chain for quality glassware across the Commonwealth market.
