Master Potter: Chris Patton - Bulbous 3 Handled Studio Pottery Vase

Vintage Chris Patton bulbous three-handled studio pottery vase — made in South Africa, Muldersdrift, 1986.

A beautifully hand-thrown bulbous stoneware vase with three handles, decorated with a cluster of eucalyptus leaves and seeds (commonly referred to as bamboo). Chris Patton — known as "The Foreign Potter" — was one of South Africa's most celebrated second-generation studio potters, highly regarded by the South African Studio Pottery elite and celebrated as Exceptional Potter of the Month on occasion. Decorated using slip, dip, wax resist, brushwork, and handmade traditional glazes.

Did you Know?

Chris Patton was born and bred in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he studied at the Belfast College of Art (now the University of Ulster's School of Art and Design), developing a passion for both lithography and pottery. After teaching art and opening a studio with fellow graduates, he grew increasingly uneasy about the political environment in Northern Ireland and in 1982 emigrated to South Africa — giving up competitive sailing around the islands of Northern Ireland to open his well-known pottery studio in Muldersdrift, Gauteng. He quickly became part of the second generation of South African studio potters, earning the nickname "The Foreign Potter" and widespread acclaim from the SA Studio Pottery elite.
