Did you Know?

The cane-wrapped handle is one of the most distinctive features of the Anglo-Oriental studio pottery tradition, introduced to Western potters by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada in the early 20th century. Cane handles were used in traditional Japanese and Chinese teapots to insulate the hand from heat while maintaining the organic, handcrafted aesthetic of the vessel. In South Africa, master potters like Ken Collins and Andrew Walford adopted this tradition as a hallmark of their work, connecting their practice to the global lineage of studio ceramics. A signed Ken Collins teapot in mint condition is a rare and desirable find for collectors of South African studio pottery.
