Tableware: Midwinter Almeira Teapot

This vintage teapot brings a commanding layer of 1960s British modernist history, striking graphic geometry, and rich Japandi character straight onto a contemporary dining table layout. Masterfully manufactured in Staffordshire, England, by the iconic W.R. Midwinter Ltd pottery workshops, this piece is a premium combination of Lord David Queensberry’s revolutionary architectural "Fine" shape and Jessie Tait's celebrated "Almeira" pattern. The design features a bold, clean cylindrical white ironstone body decorated with a stylized, retro folk-art botanical vine motif executed in rich tones of olive green, yellow ochre, and deep charcoal. Complete with its original matching, highly unique flat stackable lid, this authentic 60+ year-old statement piece serves as a sophisticated, high-impact accent styling element anchoring a mid-century sideboard console, an open kitchen shelf vignette, or a stylized coffee-station layout.

This vessel represents a pinnacle collaboration in British ceramic history. The physical cylindrical form was custom engineered by Lord David Queensberry (the Marquis of Queensberry), then a progressive Professor of Ceramics at the Royal College of Art, intentionally stripping away old-fashioned handles and unnecessary curves to focus entirely on clean lines and stackable functionality. The surface decoration is the legendary "Almeira" pattern, illustrated by Midwinter's chief designer Jessie Tait. Tait drew inspiration from Spanish and Mediterranean folk textiles, mapping the dense floral medallions seamlessly around the wide, clean canvas of the Queensberry cylinder. The base features the official stamped factory hallmark reading: "Almeira - Midwinter - Stylecraft - Staffordshire England - Shaped designed by Marquis of Queensberry."

Original Intended Use: Aristocratic mid-century afternoon tea service, high-end hosting, or morning coffee pouring. Alternate Suggested Use: A spectacular texturized staging prop system for architectural lifestyle photography shoots, an elegant graphic organizer on an upscale bar cart, or a character-rich feature on an open kitchen shelf vignette.

Did you Know?

When Midwinter originally launched the "Fine" shape series in early 1962, it caused an absolute sensation in the design world because it completely turned its back on traditional curved tableware.

Lord David Queensberry purposefully modelled the items based on strict industrial cylinders, meaning the teapots could be stacked flat on top of one another to save space in compact, modern mid-century apartments.

It was considered so revolutionary that examples of this exact shape range were immediately acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, transforming a humble kitchen teapot into a permanent monument of global high-design history!
