Oil Paintings: Mid-Century "Studio" Landscapes, Pair (Snyder & Leighton)

Pair of original mid-century "Studio" oil landscapes in ornate gallery frames.

A striking and perfectly matched pair of original vintage oil-on-canvas-board landscape paintings. These pieces are quintessential examples of mid-century "Studio Art," designed to create a cohesive, gallery-style aesthetic in a professional or residential setting.

Executed in a rich, impressionistic style, the works feature heavy impasto texture and a warm, atmospheric colour palette that brings a timeless old-world charm to any room.

Each piece is uniquely hand-signed — one by "A. Snyder" and the other by "Leighton." These signatures are characteristic of the mid-20th-century studio tradition where coordinated pieces were signed with different pseudonyms to create a diverse collection feel.

Each frame features a deep-profile ornate gallery-style wooden frame with intricate floral and scrollwork moulding and a classic linen-wrapped inner slip liner.

Mid-century "studio art" was a widespread practice in which professional art studios produced coordinated sets of original oil paintings, each signed with different pseudonyms, to give collectors the impression of a curated multi-artist gallery wall. These sets were sold through department stores and interior decorators across South Africa, the UK, and the USA during the 1950s–70s, and are now increasingly sought after by collectors of vintage decorative art.

Made in South Africa, circa 1965–1975.

Each piece is researched with care and supported by comprehensive historical notes drawn from available sources, comparative analysis, and archival references. While I am not a certified appraiser or authentication specialist, my attributions reflect careful independent research and may be refined as new evidence emerges. These notes are offered to enrich understanding and appreciation of each item, rather than as formal guarantees of age, provenance, or authenticity.

Height 31cm, Length 35cm, Width 3cm.

Excellent vintage condition. The oil paint retains its vibrant pigmentation, sharp texture, and high structural stability with no cracking, flaking, or paint loss to the impasto ridges. The canvas board backing sits firmly secured inside the framing mounts.

No structural damage to the painting board. The inner linen matting displays minor, uniform vintage dust-toning typical for a 50+ year old textile frame. The outer gilded frame shows minor, expected cosmetic rubbing to the corner edges from storage, which enhances its authentic antique character.
