Studio Pottery: Fish Serving Tray

Vintage studio ceramic fish serving platter, attributed to Graham Bolland Pottery — made in South Africa.

A beautiful handmade stoneware serving platter in a long canoe-shaped form, heavily attributed to Western Cape potter Graham Bolland. Features an eye-catching stylized fish illustration incised using the sgraffito technique into a pale cream-and-green speckled glaze background, with a rich dark iron-brown border glaze wrapped over the outer lip and rim. Heavy stoneware construction with a slightly raised lip to keep items secure.

More Details

The platter is masterfully constructed from heavy stoneware clay with a slightly raised lip to keep items secure. While this specific piece remains physically unsigned on its raw clay base, the distinctive illustration style, iron-rich reduction clay body, and exact glaze combinations mirror the known output of contemporary South African studio pottery.

Did you Know?

The fish motif has been a beloved design staple in South African studio ceramics for decades. Heavily inspired by global mid-century modern aesthetics, local independent potters frequently used sgraffito — scratching through a surface layer to reveal the clay beneath — to create whimsical animal and nature illustrations. Long specialised platters like this are incredibly popular for coastal interior styling, serving as conversation pieces for seafood dinners, beach cottage sideboards, or arranged on plate racks as wall art.
