Vintage handcrafted studio pottery bottle vase in Tenmoku glaze — origin unconfirmed, likely South African.

A beautifully formed small bottle vase with a rounded bulbous body tapering to a narrow neck and flared rim. Features a two-tone glaze — a rustic mottled brown and grey lower portion transitioning to a reddish-brown earthy upper glaze with a textured finish. Consistent with the South African studio pottery tradition. Unsigned — maker untraced.

Tenmoku glazes — originating in Song Dynasty China and refined by Japanese potters — became a defining aesthetic of South African studio pottery from the 1960s onward. Pioneering local potters were drawn to the rich iron-oxide chemistry of Tenmoku, which produces dramatically different results depending on kiln temperature, atmosphere, and clay body. The two-tone effect seen on this vase — where the glaze breaks from dark brown to reddish-earth tones — is characteristic of reduction-fired stoneware, a technique widely practised in South African studio potteries.
