Trays: Antique Victorian Gilt Tôleware Oval Gallery Serving Trays, 2

Antique 19th-Century Victorian Hand-Painted Gilt Tôleware Oval Gallery Serving Trays.

This exceptional, investment-tier pair of antique oval nested gallery trays brings a commanding layer of 19th-century Victorian high-society glamour, rare japanned lacquer artistry, and magnificent academic sophistication straight into a contemporary space.

Handcrafted during the Victorian era (c. 1880s), this beautiful nested duo represents an incredibly rare survival of traditional serving salvers.

Each tray features a deep, hand-curved wooden gallery rim framing an exquisite, metallic gold-dusted gilt base decorated with a vibrant, multi-layered hand-painted floral arrangement of deep gold roses, rosebuds, and rich sage botanical foliage.

Finished in a protective hand-rubbed organic lacquer shell with no glass, this authentic 130+ year-old nested set adds immediate warmth, depth, and curated luxury to a formal dining room buffet, an executive sideboard, or an upscale tea-service vignette.

Genuine 19th-century Victorian lacquerware oval gallery trays.
Intact nested two-piece pair featuring graduated structural proportions and matching floral motifs.
Ornate hand-painted botanical designs executed over a metallic gold gilt foundation.
Lightweight organic bentwood/molded structure with a rich, time-matured deep mahogany lacquer finish.
High-impact historical statement pieces optimized for luxury residential curation.

During the late 1800s, companies like Jennens & Bettridge of Birmingham were world-famous for creating these ultra-lightweight lacquered trays.

Because wealthy families hosted elaborate high-tea parties that required staff to carry heavy sterling silver teapots, heavy solid oak trays were far too exhausting to carry around a massive drawing-room.

Master carvers designed these feather-light trays using specialized compressed organic materials and bentwood rims, decorating the bases with genuine metallic gold dust flakes before handing them off to master artists to hand-paint the floral details. This ensured that the hosting service was incredibly light, completely waterproof against hot spills, and looked like a magnificent work of art when carried across a candle-lit ballroom!

Made in England / Europe, c. Late 1800s, making this original work of antique craft a 125+ year-old historical asset.

Each piece is researched with care and supported by comprehensive historical notes drawn from available sources, comparative analysis, and archival references. While I am not a certified appraiser or authentication specialist, my attributions reflect careful independent research and may be refined as new evidence emerges. These notes are offered to enrich understanding and appreciation of each item, rather than as formal guarantees of age, provenance, or authenticity.

• Smaller Tray: Height 3.5cm, Length 29.5cm, Width 25.5cm.
• Larger Tray: Height 5.5cm, Length 45.5cm, Width 40.5cm.

Great antique collector condition with an exceptionally sound, flat structural base footprint across both pieces, stable baseline rims, and vibrant hand-painted floral motifs that remain completely dry and entirely free from surface rot.

Visible Flaws: Displays beautiful, age-appropriate signs of a 125+ year-old domestic life. One of the trays features a historic environmental lacquer shrinkage split line along the inner curved gallery rim wall, which is entirely standard for organic compressed materials of this vintage. The lacquered gilt surfaces hold minor superficial scratches, light handling scuffs, and expected tiny historic edge bumps that completely validate their period authenticity.
