Trays: Japanese Rantai Shikki Bamboo Urushi Lacquer Tray

Exceptional, hand-woven lacquer tray brining a commanding layer of classic East Asian heritage, organic geometry, and quiet Japandi sophistication straight into a contemporary interior.

Masterfully executed by Japanese artisans during the mid-20th century, this large statement piece is a premium example of Rantai Shikki (bamboo basketry lacquerware).

The foundation is meticulously hand-plaited into an intricate, geometric open-weave pattern using fine, split natural bamboo strips, formed into an elegant scalloped oblong silhouette with integrated carved presentation handles. The entire structure is then sealed with multiple rich, deep-toned undercoats and overcoats of traditional organic Urushi lacquer tree sap.

This stunning historical artifact adds an immediate architectural layer and rich, earthy texture to a mid-century dining sideboard console, a minimalist coffee table setting, or styled as a prominent feature on an executive bar vignette.

Did you Know?

Rantai Shikki is one of the most physically demanding forms of lacquerware because it forces two opposing materials to bond perfectly together.

Wood and metal expand and contract predictably, but raw woven bamboo remains highly flexible — meaning standard paint would crack and peel off instantly.

Master craftsmen discovered that natural Urushi tree sap actually penetrates deep into the bamboo fibers on a cellular level, hardening into a natural polymer shell that is lighter than ceramic, completely waterproof, and strong enough to survive for generations without ever unravelling!

Origin & Era

Made in Japan, c. Mid-20th Century (1950s–1960s), making this original work of Japanese lacquerware an authentic 60+ year-old historical collector's asset.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 4cm, Full Length 57cm (handles included), Basketry Length 45cm, Width 35cm.

Vintage Condition

Great vintage collector condition with an exceptionally tight, perfectly sound bamboo woven structure, zero broken structural splints, and rock-solid integrated handles. The layered Urushi lacquer retains its beautiful, authentic glossy lustre and deep mahogany-brown tone variance.

Visible Flaws: Displays light, entirely expected age-appropriate surface wear, minor underlying grain shrinkage lines, and faint superficial scuffing to the underside base edges consistent with over 40 to 60 years of careful domestic handling and historical presentation use.
