Wall Art: Antique Convex Bubble Glass Couple Portrait Frame

This exceptional, large-scale antique portrait frame from the 1930s stands as a striking masterclass in early 20th-century craftsmanship, ready to bring a nostalgic layer of Americana history and dark-academia character to your home.

Produced by the historic International Art Company of Chicago, the grand oval wooden frame features a brilliant, glossy "tiger stripe" faux-graining finish that beautifully replicates highly figured exotic timber with deep amber and rich espresso bands.

Shielding the original hand-tinted charcoal and pastel portrait of an elegant period couple is its most desirable feature: the original, pristine convex "bubble glass" dome, which arches outwards to create a captivating three-dimensional window.

Bearing its authentic manufacturer's ink stamp on the reverse backing, this imposing heirloom serves as an incredible historical centrepiece for a main gallery wall or can be easily reimagined as a luxury custom convex mirror project.

The reverse backing retains its authentic, historic manufacturer stamp from the International Art Company, Chicago, a premium early 20th-century studio celebrated across North America for creating high-end curved-glass portraiture and decorative moulding. Features spectacular, highly polished trompe-l'œil faux-graining where artisans used specialized brushes and combs to paint standard base timber to perfectly mirror expensive tiger-maple or fiddleback mahogany. Bending light in a way flat glass never can, the hand-slumped convex bubble glass functions as a subtle architectural lens, enhancing the presence of the artwork and pulling the ancestral portrait forward.

Original Intended Use: Premium heirloom ancestral portraiture display for an elegant 1930s parlour or drawing-room.

Alternate Suggested Use: An opulent, high-character frame for contemporary botanical art, a rare base for a custom antiqued convex mirror conversion, or a magnificent historic prop for film sets and dark-academia interior staging.

Did you Know?

The International Art Company of Chicago was one of the absolute giants of the customized portrait trade during the Great Depression era!

Their agents would travel internationally to collect family photos, which were shipped back to Chicago to be meticulously enhanced by hand-tinting artists before being fitted into these signature heavy oval bubble glass frames.

Because shipping massive curved glass panels internationally was incredibly dangerous and expensive, very few of these Chicago-stamped pieces survived the global journey intact to reach South African collections today!

Origin & Era

Manufactured by International Art Co. (Chicago, USA), c. 1930s, standing as a beautiful, globally travelled testament to early 20th-century decorative framing art.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Length 62cm, Width 46.5cm, Depth/Thickness 5cm.

Vintage Condition

Great antique condition considering its century-old age, international travel, and delicate materials.

Visible Flaws: The rarest asset—the original convex bubble glass dome—is spectacularly preserved with zero chips, cracks, or deep scratches. The heavy oval frame remains structurally sound with its original backing and wire hangar intact. The glossy faux-grained finish shows beautiful age-appropriate character, including a small, normal chip to the gesso moulding on the bottom edge that adds a wonderful, honest historic patina to the piece.
