Wall Art: Botanical Plate Reproduction by Sir John Hill

An extraordinary museum-grade vintage botanical plate reproduction originally designed by the famous 18th-century British botanist and natural scientist, Sir John Hill (c. 1714–1775).

This exquisite multi-specimen masterwork is Plate 67 from his monumental horticultural folio, "Eden: A Compleat Body of Gardening" (originally compiled circa 1756–1757). The print features an incredibly intricate scientific grid layout capturing early spring bulbous perennials, paired with their historical common names rendered in rare 18th-century early English copperplate calligraphic typography.

Original Intended Use: A master folio engraving plate for 18th-century aristocratic botanical libraries and country estate catalogues.

Alternate Suggested Use: A sophisticated statement focal piece positioned over a fireplace mantel, an executive leather-accented home study, a formal dining room gallery layout, or a luxury boutique hotel lobby.

More Details
  • Plate 67 from Sir John Hill's "Eden: A Compleat Body of Gardening" (c. 1756–1757), featuring twelve vividly detailed botanical illustrations including rare historical cultivars: Wild English Daffodill, True Saffron, Meadow Saffron, Common Blue Hyacinth, and Lancashire Bastard Asphodell.
  • Professionally preserved behind crystal-clear glass with a generous museum-style cream matboard, housed in a heavy-set premium mahogany-toned solid wood frame with a luxurious inner gold-gilt border accent.
  • Printed on high-grade heavy-weight matte antique-style rag paper stock — no plastic shine or glossy coating. Natural fibre texture closely replicates the look and feel of an original 18th-century copperplate engraving.
  • Robust solid wood gallery frame with a distinctive multi-tiered classic contour profile, providing a solid dimensional shadow-line projection when mounted flush against a wall.
  • Commanding architectural scale at 46cm x 61cm — perfectly balanced for feature walls and upscale gallery arrangements.
Did you Know?

Did you know that Sir John Hill was one of the most prolific and controversial figures of the Georgian era in London?

While a brilliant botanist who was among the first to introduce Linnaean taxonomy to the British public, he was also an actor and playwright who famously feuded with the Royal Society after being denied membership. His masterwork folio, Eden, was commissioned as a definitive luxurious guide for wealthy British aristocrats to cultivate rare ornamental flora brought back by colonial trading vessels. Today, original plates and premium mid-century editions of John Hill's botanical illustrations are highly coveted by top-tier interior decorators to introduce pedigree, heritage, and intellectual old-world elegance to high-end residential spaces.

Origin & Era

Made in England, Circa 1970s.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 61 cm, Length 46 cm, Width 2.5 cm, Heavy for its Size.

Vintage Condition

Very good vintage condition.

Visible Flaws: Minor age-related wear. Features a small, minor cosmetic surface blemish/imperfection on the upper right corner area of the textured cream matboard surround. Additionally, there are faint, minor natural linear paper indentations/handling creases near the outer margins (clearly highlighted across the macro detail photos) and light, age-appropriate softening/creasing to the top right deckled corner tip of the heavy matte art paper. These attributes are entirely consistent with old-style rag paper handling over decades and do not break the ink or take away from the vibrant colours of the floral specimens. The frame chassis features tight, square corners with only minimal shelf contact marks completely expected from genuine mid-century structural items.
