Wall Art: Seascape Oil Painting by Celebrated Artist Claude Tournois (1926–2011)

Authentic mid-century impressionist seascape oil painting on board by the celebrated artist Claude Tournois (1926–2011).

Themed around the rugged, dramatic South African coastline, this piece showcases masterfully executed heavy impasto work. The artist utilized a palette knife and brisk, confident brushstrokes to create a superb textural sense of motion across the churning surf and breaking waves.

The colour palette is exceptionally dynamic, juxtaposing cool icy blues, white seafoam crests, and cobalt values against the deep, grounding earth tones of the jagged coastal rocks. The expansive, moody sky displays subtle hints of soft rose-pink and grey, catching the unique coastal light.

Due to the magnificent multi-layered moulding of the frame and the deep blues of the ocean, this artwork makes a powerful statement piece.

More Details

The piece is signed "C. Tournois" clearly in the lower-left corner and comes beautifully presented in its original premium vintage gallery presentation—featuring a textured linen/burlap fabric inner slip mat framed by an elegant, ornate gilded gold-and-bronze wash wooden frame.

Did you Know?

Born in France in 1926, Claude Tournois studied fine art before emigrating to South Africa, eventually basing his studio out of Durban and the Western Cape.

He dedicated his life's work to capturing the diverse interplay between the African mountains and the wild open sea under our country's unique atmospheric light conditions. Later in life, he settled in Sunningdale, England.

Tournois' works are highly favoured by South African interior design curators. His paintings seamlessly blend traditional European Impressionist colour theory with raw, textured mid-century abstract elements, giving them a timeless quality that suits both antique and ultra-modern spaces.

Origin & Era

Made in South Africa, circa 1965–1975.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 31cm, Length 35cm, Width 3cm.

Vintage Condition

Excellent vintage condition. The oil paint retains its vibrant pigmentation, sharp texture, and high structural stability with no cracking, flaking, or paint loss to the impasto ridges. The canvas board backing sits firmly secured inside the framing mounts.

No structural damage to the painting board. The inner linen matting displays minor, uniform vintage dust-toning typical for a 50+ year old textile frame. The outer gilded frame shows minor, expected cosmetic rubbing to the corner edges from storage, which enhances its authentic antique character.
