Oriental Art: Antique 19th-Century Chinese Provincial Turquoise Glazed Wabi-Sabi Planter Bowl

A magnificent piece of living maritime history that brings powerful structural scale and rich organic texture to curated spaces. This incredibly heavy, thick-walled provincial earthenware vessel was hand-thrown with a coarse clay body and dipped in a vibrant copper-turquoise lead glaze. The exterior features an incised diamond cross-hatch pattern below the upper third, punctuated by a rustic wabi-sabi rim that exposes the raw orange-brown terracotta beneath. The deep interior is fully sealed with a glossy, iron-rich chocolate brown slip glaze showing original bubbling and kiln drops. It makes an unforgettable statement centerpiece styled under natural lighting, especially when paired with a cascading green houseplant that contrasts beautifully against the weathered, ancient turquoise surface.

Hand-crafted in regional provincial kilns located within the Guangdong or Fujian provinces of Southern China. The base shows a raw, completely flat unglazed surface with original hand-coiling ridges, iron blooming, and wood-ash scorch marks from a 19th-century wood-fired kiln.

This vessel was originally born as a tall, narrow-necked Chinese Martaban storage jar engineered to carry oils or preserved goods across Indian Ocean maritime trade routes during the late Qing Dynasty. Following an old domestic break, the damaged upper collar was historically cut down and smoothed by hand so the remaining deep basin could continue to serve as a functional household utility crock, creating an authentic adaptive-reuse piece that is highly sought after by designers of rustic, eclectic, or primitive interiors.

Original Intended Use: Maritime cargo storage jar for liquid or preserved food trade. Alternate Suggested Use: Premium statement planter bowl for mature cascading indoor plants.

Instead of being discarded when the upper neck cracked over a century ago, jars of this value were routinely salvaged through manual grinding. This adaptive-reuse philosophy mirrors the Japanese art of Kintsugi or the broader regional embrace of Wabi-Sabi, ensuring that expensive utilitarian earthenware remained working assets within local homes for generations.

Vintage toestand

Weathered antique condition. The exceptionally heavy clay body remains structurally sound, completely stable, and solid. Displays an authentic wabi-sabi patina from a long domestic life: the upper rim has been historically cut down and smoothed, leaving the raw terracotta edge exposed with minor crumbling and historic glaze chips. The turquoise glaze shows extensive network crazing, natural firing pinholes, slag drops, and localized glaze scaling near the base, while the underside retains thick carbon scorch marks.
