Oil Paintings: Jean Deschamps Signed Original Maritime Oil Painting on Board

This authentic mid-century European marine oil painting on pressed hardboard depicts a traditional fishing vessel with deep terracotta sails navigating low-light waters.

Energetic impasto brushwork captures the moonlight reflecting off the moving tide, offering a moody atmospheric piece suited for shelf styling, an easel display, or a curated gallery wall.

Listed mid-20th-century artist Jean Deschamps specialized in atmospheric maritime scenes, utilizing textured palette work to capture shifting light on open coastal waters. Executed directly onto a dense pressed artist hardboard panel, a durable multi-layered media substrate widely favoured by mid-century European studio painters. Factual confirmation of signature hand-signed 'J. DESCHAMPS' in white paint script in the lower right corner. The textured verso retains a weathered, age-darkened paper label featuring historical studio inventory notes handwritten directly in red ink script by the artist or early gallery handler.

Original Intended Use: Private gallery exhibition and residential fine art decoration. Alternate Suggested Use: Compact focal artwork for a study mantelpiece, library tier, or entryway shelf.

Jean Deschamps was an established mid-century French painter celebrated for his post-impressionist seascapes and harbour scenes, heavily utilizing a palette knife to build thick layers of paint that vividly captured the dramatic motion of the Atlantic and Mediterranean tides. Mid-century French studio artists frequently catalogued their private collections using specific red ink scripts on un-gummed backing paper to serve as an internal reference library system before pieces were logged by major commercial houses.

Made in France, circa 1950s/1960s, making this artwork 60+ years.

Excellent vintage condition.
Visible Flaws: The oil paint layers are stable and free of cracking or flaking; the raw hardboard panel is structurally flat.
