Arcoroc: Sierra Ruby Red Rouge Bowl, Shallow

Ruby red rouge fruit bowl in the "Sierra" pattern by Arcoroc France.

This bowl is rendered in Arcoroc's absolute crown jewel colourway: Ruby Red (Rouge). When styled in ambient light or near a window, the dense volcanic glass completely transforms, channelling a brilliant, fiery crimson glow through its core.

The bowl features a magnificent dual-textured finish — a mirror-polished smooth interior basin paired with a deeply embossed, organic tree-bark crackle relief texture on the exterior. It represents the pinnacle of retro mid-century luxury glass, aligning seamlessly with Maximalist Luxury and 1970s Revival interior aesthetics.

Original Intended Use: Premium commercial-grade serving bowl for luxury continental hotels and bistros.

More Details

Priced according to Production, Colour and Size.

Highly Dangerous and Costly Production - Unlike ordinary green or amber glass made using common, cheap iron oxides, creating true Ruby Red translucent glass required adding highly volatile, rare chemical minerals like selenium, cadmium, or even actual gold chlorides directly into the roaring molten mixture.

The Hazard: If the immense temperatures fluctuated by even a few degrees during casting, the entire batch of molten glass would destabilize, either turning a muddy brown or cracking instantly under thermal cooling stress.

The Cost: Because of the strict manufacturing failure rate and the hazardous, expensive raw metallic powders involved, Arcoroc limited the production of "Rouge" to highly selective, restricted timeframes in the 1970s.

High Collector Demand - The global demand for mid-century "Jewel-Tone" kitchenware and Hollywood Regency collectibles has skyrocketed, heavily driven by trendy international vintage interior stylists, lifestyle magazines, and editorial set designers.

The Rarity: While small individual ruby cups or saucers pop up occasionally, finding a massive, large-format 28 cm centrepiece master serving bowl that managed to escape being dropped or heavily chipped in a restaurant over the last 50 years is a rarity.

The Grand Architectural Format - The physical size dictates a lot of the value. An item with a massive 28 cm structural footprint is classified as a "master centrepiece vessel." It isn't just everyday utilitarian cookware—it functions as a substantial, standalone piece of structural architectural glass art. The sheer weight, pristine clarity, and visual impact of the light filtering through the red substrate instantly signal high-end heritage, justifying its placement in a luxury vintage collection rather than a standard second-hand store.

Did you Know?

Did you know that among all mid-century glass collectors, Arcoroc's Ruby Red Sierra line is considered the ultimate "holy grail" find?

While the amber and green colour runs were heavily commercialized, the ruby red pieces were produced in highly restricted numbers due to the exceptionally complex and costly process of injecting selenium and fine mineral oxides into the molten glass batch to achieve a true, stable crimson tint.

Today, large-format master serving bowls in this colourway command premium prices at specialty European design auctions. Top-tier decorators actively seek them out to serve as rich, texturally complex focal centrepieces that instantly elevate any upscale dining room or kitchen vignette.

Origin & Era

Made in France, 1970’s.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 5cm, Diameter 28cm, Heavy for its Size.

Vintage Condition

Minor age-related wear. Superb structural integrity, outstanding glass resonance, and completely free from any structural chips, cracks, structural clouding, or flea bites along the top rim.

The smooth underside resting base perimeter shows completely standard, faint shelf-scuff wear from historical placement.

As an authentic, pre-loved mid-century utilitarian item that was used and appreciated, the glass-smooth interior basin floor exhibits a visible, scattered network of light surface scratching and utensil track lines from historical domestic serving and stacking.

These are entirely superficial character marks from honest usage that do not compromise the durability or display beauty of the textured exterior presentation.
