Bookshelf Art: Johannes Vermeer Print, Woman with a Pearl Necklace

This beautiful vintage miniature framed print brings a classic layer of Dutch Golden Age history, rich golden texture, and moody maximalist character straight onto a gallery wall layout or library shelf display. Housed in an exceptionally heavy, highly ornate baroque-style cast chalkware frame, this mid-century piece features a miniature print reproduction of Johannes Vermeer’s masterwork "Woman with a Pearl Necklace". The reverse features its original historical gallery provenance label attributing the work to the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Berlin, placing its production firmly before the museum's mid-1950s reorganization. Ready to hang with its original top loop mount, this character-rich miniature adds immediate vintage charm to any eclectic corner. Pairs beautifully as a matching aesthetic duo with our Gainsborough miniature print.

The Historical Print Provenance: The reverse retains its original weathered paper label reading: "Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) - The Pearl Necklace - (Berlin, Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum)". Because the museum was permanently renamed the Bode-Museum in 1956, this label serves as an absolute physical validation of its mid-century age. Baroque Chalkware Architecture: The miniature is framed within a thick-gauge, ornate baroque-revival scrolling foliage chalkware casting. The frame features a deep 2.5cm edge profile and is finished in a matured bronze-gold tone that highlights the heavy plaster relief. Display Mechanics: Equipped with its original stamped metal top hanging loop on the reverse for easy vertical installation.

Original Intended Use: Mid-century residential parlour accent or small budget-friendly fine art collection piece. Alternate Suggested Use: A lovely textural filler item tucked into a larger gallery wall grid, propped upright on an executive desk layout, or a charming gift for a classical art history enthusiast.

Did you Know?

Johannes Vermeer only produced around 36 paintings throughout his entire life, making his works some of the rarest and most fiercely guarded treasures in the world. During the mid-20th century, European museums produced these heavy, cast chalkware miniature frames so people could collect small "pocket gallery" versions of these famous masterpieces for their homes. Chalkware was the perfect choice because it gave the mini frames the intense weight, solid feel, and dramatic deep-relief carving of a giant museum asset!

Origin & Era

Made in Europe, c. 1940s–1950s.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 19cm, Length 16cm, Width 2.5cm.

Vintage Condition

Great vintage condition with excellent structural integrity. The frame holds a beautiful, honest vintage patina showing minor surface paint flakes and localized green under-oxidation. There is a visible half-moon chip along the inner frame border right to the side of the woman's back, neatly exposing the stark white chalkware plaster core underneath. This localized fracture is entirely stable and adds a gorgeous, romantic touch of authentic mid-century age to the piece.
