Botanical Art: Rudolf Marloth & S. Gower Historic Botanical Studies

A matching pair of large vintage mid-to-late 20th-century botanical portfolio prints reproducing iconic designs by Rudolf Marloth and S. Gower.

Presented in twin, heavy gold-gilt rococo sweep frames with multi-stepped gallery matting. This coordinated set brings together two iconic natural history designs: Rudolf Marloth’s golden South African Cape succulents and S. Gower's elegant 19th-century British white bulb flower study. Both prints are rendered with crisp historical details on a specialized faux-grain textured background that gives them a sophisticated, time-honoured appearance. Set within matching, heavy vintage frames boasting deep rococo-style scrolling gold borders and multi-layered gallery matting, this duo provides immediate estate-level presence to your walls.

Original Intended Use: Coordinated Interior Fine Art and Classical Botanical Wall Display. Alternate suggested use: Hang this large pair side-by-side to perfectly frame a doorway or hallway entryway, mount them flanking an elegant lounge mirror, or display them prominently on a dark wood library feature wall.

More Details

  • The first print replicates Plate 65 from Dr. Rudolf Marloth’s historic The Flora of South Africa series (c. 1913), showing indigenous Cape succulents.
  • The second print replicates Plate 162 from a 19th-century British botanical engraving illustrated by S. Gower ("S. Gower del.").
  • Both pieces are produced on a vintage laminate cardstock featuring a printed faux-wood grain texture background.
  • They are mounted under matching triple-lined stepped cream mat boards and housed in heavy, coordinated mid-century rococo-style gold sweep composite frames.
Did you Know?

While these are high-quality vintage mid-century portfolio reproduction sheets rather than centuries-old loose paper, they celebrate absolute giants of natural history art. The yellow print captures Rudolf Marloth’s legendary Flora of South Africa, while the white print reproduces a beautiful 19th-century English engraving drawn by the illustrator S. Gower. A design house beautifully paired these two historical illustrations together on matching textured backgrounds, creating a luxury framing set explicitly intended for high-end home styling.

Origin & Era

Made in Europe, Circa 1975, making this pair 51 years old.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Height 58cm, Length 48cm, Frame Width 3cm.

Vintage Condition

Structurally solid, heavy, and completely secure for wall display. Visible Flaws: The ornate gold scrollwork frames are firm with light vintage handling wear on the corners. The yellow Marloth print is highly crisp and flat. The white S. Gower print shows authentic vintage character and signs of age, including scattered foxing spots along the upper paper border and a gentle, vertical waving/rippling of the sheet near the bottom edge inside the matting line, which is consistent with historical exposure to moisture over its life. This natural paper movement is safely stabilized behind the glass and adds an authentic vintage pedigree to the presentation. The reverse paper backing covers show minor handling tears.
