Carved Wood: Italian 6-Spout Grole Friendship Cup

This exceptional, hand-carved wood artifact brings a deep layer of European folklore, exquisite chip-carving artistry, and rich conversational character straight into a premium contemporary space.

Handcrafted by local alpine artisans in the Aosta Valley region of Northwest Italy (bordering France) during the late 20th century, this traditional vessel is known as a Grole, or Grolla dell'Amicizia (Friendship Cup).

Sculpted from a single block of heavy native hardwood, the shallow, round bowl features a beautifully detailed central floral rosette emblem flanked by six individual, hand-hollowed drinking spouts.

Complete with its original matching, highly decorative stepped lid, this authentic vintage statement piece adds an incredible layer of cultural history and rustic texture to an executive study bookshelf, a formal dining room buffet layout, or styled as a unique conversational centrepiece.

Original Intended Use: Communal hot coffee and grappa sharing vessel or mountain lodge décor. Alternate Suggested Use: A highly texturized styling anchor for a mid-century library console, an elegant graphic accent for a masculine bar vignette, or a premium historical staging prop for hospitality design.

More Details
  • The Alpine Tradition: The rich historical ritual of using a multi-spouted Grole dates back to ancient times in the freezing French-Italian mountain passes, possibly originating with the "Soldiers of the Snow" who needed high-energy sustenance in the cold. It stands as a powerful, centuries-old symbol of friendship, family warmth, and communal fraternity.
  • The Communal Ritual: Traditionally, the vessel is used to serve Caffè alla Valdostana (Café de l'Amitié or "Coffee of Friendship") — a potent alpine brew combining strong black coffee, orange and lemon peels, sugar, and heavy mountain grappa. The mixture is lit on fire until the sugar caramelizes, the lid is replaced to extinguish the flame, and the cup is passed clockwise from person to person, each drinking from a different spout without ever setting the vessel down.
  • Artisan Craftsmanship: Masterfully chip-carved from a heavy, tight-grained mountain hardwood. To maintain the timber's natural depth, luster, and structural moisture, store in a well-ventilated room away from direct heat sources or drying air conditioning units.
Did you Know?
  • The word Grole comes from the local alpine dialect word for "Grail" or "Graila," referring to early medieval wooden storage chests and cups.
  • Because these mountain villages were completely cut off from the rest of Europe by heavy snow for months at a time, families would sit around the open hearth and pass a single Grole around the room to keep warm.
  • Drinking from a multi-spouted cup ensured that everyone shared the exact same blend while keeping the communal experience completely sanitary — turning a simple hot coffee drink into a binding, sacred neighbourhood pact of survival and friendship!
