Carved Wood: Marbled Olive Burl Wood Bowl

This extraordinary, gallery-grade hand-sculpted wood sculpture brings a commanding layer of organic modernism, raw botanical complexity, and striking visual movement straight into a high-end contemporary space.

Masterfully hollowed out from a single, heavily figured block of wild olive burl wood, this specimen bowl mimics a fluid, elongated seed pod or organic leaf silhouette.

The grain structure is spectacular — showcasing a dense, highly chaotic, and marbled network of deep charcoal-black swirls tightly woven against golden-honey, amber, and rich cream tones.

Elevated on small, hand-integrated peg feet that allow the sweeping, asymmetric rim to float gracefully off a flat surface, this authentic vintage statement piece adds an incredible layer of sculptural warmth and natural majesty to a luxury living room coffee table, an executive desktop arrangement, or a formal dining room buffet vignette.

Original Intended Use: Premium residential coffee table focal piece or artistic key/trinket holder. Alternate Suggested Use: A commanding textural anchor for a minimalist mid-century console setup, a spectacular staging prop for architectural lifestyle shoots, or an executive boardroom styling asset.

More Details
  • The Burl Metallurgy: Crafted from a rare, dense wild olive tree burl (Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata). Burls are dense, highly deformed structural outgrowths that occur naturally on slow-growing heritage trees when subjected to environmental stressors. Because the wood fibers are forced to grow in a tight, hyper-compressed chaotic matrix rather than straight lines, the resulting timber is exceptionally heavy and completely resistant to splitting.
  • Artisan Freeform Sculpture: A completely handmade item where the carver allowed the natural outer rind and internal grain mapping of the root block to dictate the final asymmetric pod shape. The entire outer shell is hand-burnished to a smooth satin finish that captures shifting ambient light dramatically.
  • Elevated Architectural Base: Intentionally engineered with integrated, hand-turned peg feet on the underside base. This prevents the heavy, deep-set hollowed basin from resting flat, creating a beautiful negative space shadow line beneath the timber body.
Did you Know?

Olive burl is one of the single most difficult and exhausting materials for a woodworker to hollow out.

Because the grain fibers are completely twisted and grown over one another in a chaotic maze, a standard straight chisel cannot cut through it smoothly. If the carver applies too much pressure or moves a fraction too fast, the iron blade will catch on a cross-fiber and shatter the wood completely!

Craftsmen have to work microscopically slowly, hand-scraping the interior millimetre by millimetre to reveal these swirling black marble bands — meaning a massive 47cm pod like this represents weeks of intense, highly focused physical labour.

Origin & Era

Made in Southern Africa, 1990's, making this bowl 30+ year-old.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Full Length 47cm, Width 17cm, Average Height 9cm.

Vintage Condition

Excellent vintage collector condition with an exceptionally sound, rock-solid timber structure, zero modern repairs, and a beautifully preserved smooth basin cavity. The wood holds a magnificent hand-burnished satin luster.

Visible Flaws: Displays two tiny, original natural timber pocket cavities along the upper rim margin and base edge. These minor surface variations are entirely expected, original to the wild burl growth formation itself, and serve as absolute physical validation of its raw, unaltered botanical authenticity.
