Coasters: Sliced Matumi / Mesquite Live-Edge Wood Coasters

This highly graphic, deeply polished set of six vintage coasters brings a dramatic layer of raw organic luxury and high-gloss mid-century texture straight to your tabletop.

Handcrafted from organic cross-sections of a dense, premium hardwood (highly characteristic of South African Matumi or West Texas Mesquite timber lines), each coaster displays a breath-taking natural contrast.

The fiery, deep reddish-maroon heartwood is ringed by a lighter, golden-amber sapwood halo and framed beautifully by its original rough, live-edge tree bark.

Every individual slice has been finished with a glass-smooth, thick high-gloss protective lacquer that accentuates the swirling growth rings, making each piece a small, functional work of abstract natural art. Ideal for setting down fine glassware or displayed as a nested geometric stack on an open bar cart, these texturized slices instantly elevate a modern space.

Each coaster is a unique, non-uniform tree "cookie" slice preserving its authentic organic growth structure, complete with natural hollows, dense grain waves, and the original rugged bark exterior.

Crafted from a heavy, ultra-dense hardwood prized for its stability and water resistance. The thick, high-gloss clear coat acts as an impenetrable barrier against moisture, ensuring that sweating drink glasses won't stain or warp the rich timber beneath.

Unlike modern, mass-produced uniform plastic or factory-milled coasters, this vintage set celebrates the raw, unaltered wilderness of the tree trunk, carrying a heavy, tactile weight footprint in the hand.

Original Intended Use: Functional drink coasters for a vintage home bar, lounge, or study setup.

Alternate Suggested Use: Small artistic display dishes for a jewellery vanity, premium staging props for a brutalist or mid-century interior design photoshoot, or layered natural risers for displaying small crystals and air plants on floating shelves.

Did you Know?

In high-end woodworking subcultures, cutting tree "cookies" (cross-sections) is notoriously difficult to master because wood naturally shrinks and expands radially as it dries out.

To keep these thin slices from splitting open into huge cracks or shedding their outer bark over the decades, the timber must undergo an incredibly slow, specialized curing process.

The deep red heartwood seen here is the oldest part of the tree, packed dense with natural oils and minerals that give it its heavy weight and distinct, moody colour payoff!

Origin & Era

Vintage Handcrafted, c. Late 20th Century, serving as a gorgeous, timeless heirloom testament to natural rustic woodworking.

Dimensions

Approximate Dimensions: Variable due to natural growth shapes; each slice averages roughly 10cm to 12cm in diameter.

Vintage Condition

Good vintage collector condition with an exceptionally solid, heavy wood structure and zero structural wobbles.

Visible Flaws: Shows beautiful age-related character with a wonderfully preserved high-gloss finish. The original rough bark rim remains beautifully intact around the perimeter with only minor natural weathering typical of authentic, centuries-old raw timber.
