Portmeirion Botanic Garden "Arctotis Grandiflora" (African Daisy) Dinner Plate — First-Decade Production.

Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis and launched in 1972, the Arctotis Grandiflora motif is exceptionally popular in South Africa due to its celebration of indigenous floral heritage. The centre showcases radiant golden blooms and intricately detailed native butterflies, beautifully framed by the series' iconic signature green laurel leaf border.

This specific plate bears the rare genuine first-generation Idyllic Wreath factory backstamp used strictly between 1972 and 1982, confirming it as an authentic first-decade British production piece crafted from heavy premium fine earthenware.

Portmeirion Pottery was founded by Susan Williams-Ellis in 1960 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The Botanic Garden pattern, launched in 1972, drew on illustrations from 17th and 18th-century botanical reference books, with each plate featuring a different plant or flower specimen labelled in both English and Latin. The pattern became one of the best-selling tableware designs in British ceramic history and remains in production today — making early first-decade pieces with the original Idyllic Wreath backstamp (1972–1982) the most prized by serious collectors.
