Dinnerware: Portmeirion The Botanic Garden, Manchineel Tree, Dinner Plate

Portmeirion Botanic Garden "Manchineel Tree" (Hippomane Mancinella) Dinner Plate — Vintage Production.

Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis and launched in 1972, the Manchineel Tree motif is one of the most eccentric and conversation-starting designs in the entire Botanic Garden collection. The centre showcases a beautifully detailed botanical illustration of the infamous Manchineel tree — the world's most dangerous tree — framed by the series' iconic signature green laurel leaf border.

The underside features the genuine vintage Shield & Ribbon "Circa 1818" factory backstamp, certifying its authentic British heritage and manufacture from the 1980s to early 1990s era. Crafted from heavy premium fine earthenware with exceptional visual presence and weight.

Original Intended Use: Flagship main dinner plate or premium replacement piece for an original Botanic Garden tableware collection.

Did you Know?

Did You Know? The Manchineel tree holds the official Guinness World Record for the most dangerous tree on earth?

In Spanish history, it was feared as manzanilla de la muerte ("little apple of death") because every single part of the live tree is toxic. Susan Williams-Ellis’s daring artistic choice to mix peaceful butterflies with a notoriously dangerous plant makes this specific motif one of the most eccentric, rebellious, and conversation-starting designs ever printed on a fine dining collection!
