Glass Pitcher: Art Deco Edwardian Pitcher, Davidson Glass

Vintage Art Deco Glass Pitcher in the Davidson Jacobean Pattern — a fine example of Edwardian English style, sparkling brilliantly in the light and entirely flawless for its age.

Made by the British company Davidson of Gateshead from solid heavy pressed and moulded glass, this 1-litre pitcher sings with a clear bell-like ring when tapped — a hallmark of high-quality crystal composition. At approximately 80 years of age, it is a piece that can be loved and passed down for generations.

The Jacobean range was produced by Davidson from the 1930s–40s, based on a design originally created by Josef Inwald of Czechoslovakia in 1921, and manufactured for the wholesaler Clayton Mayers from 1932.

More Details

Davidson & Co. was founded in 1867 in Gateshead, England, and became one of Britain's most celebrated pressed glass manufacturers. Their Jacobean pattern — characterised by deeply moulded Gothic-inspired geometric panels — became one of their most enduring and widely exported designs, sold across Britain, the Commonwealth, and beyond throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

The original Jacobean design was patented by Josef Inwald of the Bohemian glassworks in 1921, before Davidson licensed and adapted it for the British market in 1932 — making this pitcher a fascinating piece of cross-European glass design history.

Did you Know?

The clear, sustained bell-like ring this pitcher produces when tapped is a reliable indicator of lead crystal content. Lead crystal vibrates at a higher frequency than standard glass due to its density, producing a longer, more musical tone. Standard glass produces a dull, short chime by comparison.
