High Tea: Copeland Spode Chinese Rose Trio

Vintage Copeland Spode Trio in the "Chinese Rose" Pattern.

A beautiful and highly collectible vintage Copeland Spode tea trio comprising a teacup, saucer, and cake plate in the iconic "Chinese Rose" pattern. Characterised by its charming country cottage style with red, pink, blue, and yellow flowers and a distinctive green edge, this pattern has been beloved by collectors for over a century.

The red backstamp on this piece places it in the pre-1970s production window, with dating evidence pointing to September 1948 based on the impressed date code. The "Chinese Rose" pattern was first registered in 1913 (Rd No. 629599) and remained in continuous production until 2007 — making early mid-century examples like this particularly sought after.

Original Intended Use: Traditional British afternoon tea service for one.

More Details

The "Chinese Rose" pattern was officially registered with the British Patent Office on 13 December 1913 (Registration Number Rd No. 629599), though it draws on an earlier 1815 Spode design. The specific "Copeland Spode England" printed backstamp layout on this piece is characteristic of early-to-mid 20th-century production. An impressed date code above the printed mark — a letter over two numbers — provides precise dating: the letter represents the month and the numbers the last two digits of the year, placing this trio firmly in September 1948.

Did you Know?

Spode is one of Britain's oldest and most celebrated pottery houses, founded by Josiah Spode in Stoke-on-Trent in 1770. The company is widely credited with perfecting the formula for fine bone china and blue transfer printing — two innovations that defined English tableware for centuries. The "Chinese Rose" pattern, inspired by 18th-century Chinese export porcelain, remained in continuous production for nearly a century, making it one of the longest-running patterns in British ceramic history.
