Italian: Cora Originale Carved Roosters

Pair of mid-century Italian carved stone roosters by Cora Originale — made in Italy, 1950s–1960s.

A stunning pair of hand-carved stone (or alabaster) rooster figurines, identified by the original Cora Originale foil labels on their bases. Embodying Italian warmth and rusticity, these roosters are a beloved motif in Italian homes — symbolising good luck, protection, and prosperity. The distinctive colour wash on the base points to a mid-20th-century regional Italian style. Heavy and substantial — a commanding pair for a mantle, sideboard, or farmhouse kitchen.

Did you Know?

The rooster holds deep significance in Italian culture, rooted in a famous 15th-century Florentine legend. In 1478, the Pazzi family plotted to assassinate Giuliano de' Medici during a feast in the village of Gallina (Italian for "chicken"). As the assassins crept through the village at night, roosters in a nearby yard began crowing so loudly that they woke Giuliano and his guards — the plot was foiled and the Pazzi family banished from Florence. In gratitude, Giuliano commissioned local artisans to create ceramic rooster pitchers (La Brocca di Gallo) as gifts to the villagers, cementing the rooster as a symbol of good fortune and household protection that endures in Italian homes to this day.
