Did you Know?

Andrew Walford is legendary in South African ceramics for digging his own clay and formulating his own glazes from local raw materials near his Shongweni studio in KwaZulu-Natal. Trained in the Japanese Mashiko-Yaki tradition, his work bridges Eastern ceramic philosophy with distinctly African materiality. In the South African art market, large-scale reduction-fired stoneware by Walford is highly coveted — the sheer technical difficulty of firing a piece this large in a traditional oil-burning kiln significantly boosts its rarity and value. His work is held in major South African collections and regularly appears at Strauss & Co auction.
