Tableware: Arabia Finland Kilta Cobalt Blue Creamer by Kaj Franck

Vintage Arabia Finland 'Kilta' Cobalt Blue Creamer by Kaj Franck, 1950s–1970s.

This cobalt blue creamer is more than just a serving piece — it's a piece of design history. Designed by Kaj Franck in 1952 for Arabia Finland's iconic 'Kilta' series, this is an original early production piece. The unglazed white base ring and absence of a permanent stamp are characteristic of the 1950s–1970s era when cold-stamps were used — a known authentication marker for early Kilta production.

Kilta was the first tableware line ever sold by the individual piece rather than in fixed sets, allowing people to buy only what they needed. It was later updated and renamed Teema in 1981 and remains a global bestseller today.

Original Intended Use: Milk or cream jug for the Kilta/Teema table service.

Alternate Suggested Use: Statement shelf piece in a Scandinavian design or mid-century modern collection, or a functional accent in a Japandi-inspired kitchen.

Did you Know?

Kaj Franck (1911–1989) was a legendary Finnish designer often referred to as the "conscience of Finnish design." He revolutionised post-war tableware by prioritising functionalism, social equality, and essentialism — believing high-quality practical design should be accessible to everyone. He often preferred his designs to remain anonymous, viewing them as simple tools for everyday life rather than status-symbol art pieces. This is one reason why many early Kilta pieces are unmarked. The Kilta line was later renamed Teema in 1981 and is still in production today, making it one of the longest-running tableware designs in history.
