T.G. Green: Cornish Ware Blue: Dreadnought Pitcher

T.G. Green & Co. Cornishware 1.5-Pint "Dreadnought" Milk/Water Pitcher.

It features the globally celebrated, iconic broad horizontal bands of deep cobalt blue and clean white earthenware slip glaze.

The "Dreadnought" shape features an ultra-robust, wide-based cylindrical body designed for heavy daily farmhouse kitchen use, paired with a sharp, integrated low-profile pouring spout. A thick, beautifully moulded ear-shaped handle is securely applied to the rear. The crisp white stripes are produced via traditional English lathe-turning, where bands of the hand-applied blue slip are precision-scraped away on a spinning wheel to reveal the cream earthenware clay body matrix beneath prior to clear glazing.

Hand-crafted by T.G. Green & Co. at the historic Church Gresley potteries in Derbyshire, England. Cornishware has been a beloved staple of high-end British farmhouse design since its introduction in 1926.

Display Suggestion: This iconic blue-and-white motif serves as a striking visual anchor in country kitchens or modern coastal interiors. Display it prominently on open shelving alongside copper accents or rustic wooden boards to highlight its vintage silhouette.

Original Intended Use: Large-capacity farmhouse breakfast table milk, juice, iced water, or hot custard pitcher.

More Details

The base features the coveted Green Shield backstamp (reading "Green & Co Ltd / Cornish Kitchen Ware"), authenticating this piece as an original mid-century production from the 1930s to 1950s. Early shield marks command a high price premium over modern machine-printed reproductions.

The "Dreadnought" shape is highly favoured by curators because its low centre of gravity makes it exceptionally steady. Finding large-capacity 1.5-pint variants with verified mid-century backstamps intact is an uncommon market find.

Did you Know?

Did you know that Cornishware got its name because an early sales representative said the blue and white stripes reminded them of the blue skies and white-crested waves of Cornwall?

These iconic stripes were originally achieved by turning the unfired blue-glazed pottery on a lathe to scrape away bands of colour, exposing the stark white clay underneath.

Origin & Era

Made in England, Circa 1930s–1960s.

Dimensions

Height 12cm, Length 16cm (Across Handle to Spout), Width 12cm (Base Diameter), Volume 1.5 Pint Capacity (~850ml).

Vintage Condition

Age-related wear to be expected, some internal staining. No structural cracks, major impact fractures, or restorations.

Features a single, very small superficial micro-glaze flake chip right on the tip of the pouring spout edge (clearly pictured), which is standard for utilitarian kitchen earthenware of this vintage. Beautiful, authentic micro-glaze crazing (fine web-like lines) is present across the white bands, confirming its genuine mid-century age. Faint shelf scuffing on the unglazed base ring.
