A shallow, deep-sided hand-thrown studio pottery serving bowl finished in a rustic glossy milky-white tin glaze. Produced by the celebrated Old Jar Pottery of Benoni, the interior and exterior walls are hand-decorated with a stylised continuous geometric ring of cobalt-blue floral blossoms outlined in dark iron oxides and warm ochre bands. Did you Know?

The Old Jar Pottery (T.O.J.) operated in Benoni, Gauteng from 1953 to 1984, celebrated across South Africa for its vibrant maiolica-style domestic ware. During peak production in the 1970s, a small guild of talented decorators hand-painted intricate floral patterns across entire matching dinner and canister sets — each piece unique due to the hand-applied decoration. Maiolica (tin-glazed earthenware with hand-painted decoration) has roots in Renaissance Italy and was brought to South Africa through European craft traditions. T.O.J. pieces are now eagerly collected as icons of mid-century South African domestic pottery heritage.
